Sentinel

Bigjigs Rail

Sentinel £5.25

Sentinel was the last engine to go into industrial use in Great Britain but children will drive this lovely replica model for years to come! Compatible with all wooden railway systems, this little engine works neatly with wagons and vehicles from our range for a fun, extended play experience.

History

Sentinel was built at the Sentinel Wagon Works, Shrewsbury in 1957. Her builder's number is 9632. She was the last locomotive to go into industrial use in Great britain.

Sentinal started her working life at West Midlands Gas Board, Walsall Gasworks and remained in use until 1969 when they stopped using trains.

In 1970 Sentinel entered preservation. She moved to Chasewater in 1982, just a few miles from her former home. Sentinal is an unusual 4-wheeled engine with a vertical boiler tank and chain drive, different to a conventional steam locomotive. She operates at high pressure to power the small cylinders driving the locomotive through reduction gears and chain drive. Sentinal is rated at 100 horse power.
