Murdoch is Sodor's largest and strongest steam engine, with ten driving wheels; he is bigger and stronger than Gordon. He is painted orange, with green and red lining, gold stripes, and is one of the few engines on the Standard Gauge railway to have nameplates fitted. Murdoch helps haul long goods trains on the Main Line, and is good friends with Salty and Harvey. But in spite of his size, Murdoch is a gentle giant, who is often shy and prefers some peace and quiet when the hustle and bustle of the city life becomes too much – and there is nothing better for him than a quiet run through the countryside, die-cast metal, with "smart magnets" that allow connection in either direction.
